4 Pool Supplies to Check On Before Pool Season Starts

Now that spring is finally on its way, it’s time to start thinking about opening up your pool. Before you start stocking up on chlorine and pool toys, though, you’ll want to make sure all of your pool equipment is in good working order. Here are four pieces of pool equipment you should check when getting your pool ready for the summer.

1. Your Pump

Your pool’s pump keeps your water from becoming stagnant. It’s the first thing you should check on when preparing your pool each year.
Start by checking your pump’s O-rings. Are they cracked or brittle-looking? If so, replace them to avoid leaks later on. If not, apply some more grease to them to keep them well-lubricated for the summer.

Once this is done, turn your pump on. What does it sound like? If you hear any strange clicks or bangs, turn it off and check the motor and bearings. If it doesn’t turn on at all, you’ll obviously need to replace it before you can begin using your pool.

2. Your Filter

Your pool’s filter keeps your water clean and safe to swim in, so it’s one of the most important things to check before summer arrives.

Take your filter cartridge out of your pump and examine it. Is the plastic on either end of it cracked? Are the pleats worn or torn? If you spot either of these issues, you’ll need to replace the cartridge. If the pleats are dirty, you can clean them using your garden hose or a commercial pool cartridge cleaner.

3. Your Stairs or Ladder

Next, you’ll want to check up on your pool stairs or ladder. These things are vital pieces of safety equipment, so it’s important to keep them in tip-top shape.

Check your pool ladder or steps for signs of rust or degradation. Is the structure stable? Are there any cracks in the plastic parts? Are there any aesthetic problems like fading or warping? If you notice anything amiss, consider replacing your equipment. You don’t want it to break unexpectedly and leave someone with no safe way to get out of your pool.

4. Your Heater

If you have a pool heater, you’ll need to do some troubleshooting to make sure it’s working properly.

Start by checking for power issues. Can you turn your heater on? If so, does it stay on, or does it shut off soon after? Problems like these may indicate that something is wrong with your power source.

Next, check for error codes on your heater’s digital display. If you see any, consult your heater’s user manual to determine what they mean and how to fix them.

Finally, play with your heater’s temperature settings and see how it responds. Can you raise and lower the temperature freely? Does it seem to be making a difference in the water’s temperature? If it isn’t working correctly, it may need to be replaced.
