5 Pool Supplies That You May Need to Replace This Spring

Do you have all of the supplies you need to open your pool this summer? There’s a good chance that at least a few of them have run out or sustained damage since last year. Here are 5 of the most common items pool owners need to replace this spring.

1. Your Pool Floaties

Pool floaties are incredibly easy to damage when storing them over the winter. If they are nicked or scratched at any point before spring, it’s game over.

Check your pool floaties for leaks by inflating them, then listening closely for a hissing or squeaking sound. If you find a hole, don’t bother trying to patch it – exposure to water makes most adhesives ineffective. Replace the floatie instead.

2. Your Filter Cartridge

Your pool filter cartridges don’t last forever. If you didn’t change your cartridge when you closed your pool last fall, it’s likely that it needs to be replaced now. Check yours for signs of damage, such as frayed pleats or cracks in the plastic casing. If you find any, it’s time for a new one.

3. Your Pool Chemicals

Maintaining the right balance of pool chemicals keeps your pool safe to swim in. If you’re running low on chemicals like chlorine or bromine, stock up before pool season starts. You’ll want to have plenty on hand so you can adjust the levels of each in your pool as needed. Replace your old stock before pool season starts to make sure you won’t run out.

4. Your Pool Cover

Pool covers are notorious for sustaining damage over the winter. Yours has likely had several inches of ice and snow sitting on it for months. The sharp edges of the ice may have scratched or punctured the cover during this time.

In some cases, you may be able to patch this damage with a repair kit. However, it’s always better to replace the cover entirely. A new cover will have the structural integrity it needs to stand up to the ice next winter.

5. Your Pool Pump

Your pool’s pump aids in filtration and keeps the water from becoming stagnant, but it can’t do its job if it’s damaged. Many pool owners accidentally leave a little bit of water in the pump or don’t cover it properly over the winter. These little oversights can lead to big problems when the pump freezes.

Check your pump for cracks, leaks, and other signs of damage. If these issues are related to just one area, you may be able to get away with swapping one or two parts. If the damage is more extensive or the casing is cracked, however, you’ll need to replace the pump entirely.
