How to Prepare Your Backyard for a New Pool
You’ve finally done it: you’re putting in a pool! This is a big and exciting decision, but it also means you have a hefty project in front of you. Here are a few things you’ll need to do before starting your pool installation.
1. Check Your Zoning Laws
Before you commit to installing a pool, make sure you’re legally allowed to do so in the first place. Some cities have zoning laws that restrict what kinds of structures you can have on your property. You may need to obtain one or more permits from the city council before construction can begin.
2. Measure the Area
Once you’ve made sure that you’re covered legally, it’s time to figure out where you want your pool to go. Choose a spot in your yard and measure out an area that fits the dimensions of your pool. Mark the measurements with some posts and plastic tape as you go so you can keep track of how large the space is getting.
During this process, you may find that your pool takes up more room than you were expecting. Luckily, it’s still early enough to rethink your plans. Move your markers and tape around your yard until you find the pool location that works best for you.
3. Clear the Way
When you’ve figured out where your pool is going to go, the next step is to get that space ready for installation. You’ll want to remove all rocks, lawn ornaments, and greenery from the area – even grass and sod. The space should have nothing in it but dirt. If any landscaping elements like shrubs and garden beds are very close to the pool area, you might want to move them back a bit as well. Remember, you’ll need space around the pool to get in and out of it. You may need extra room to keep a pump and maintenance equipment, too.
4. Level the Ground
Once the ground is clear, the last thing you need to do is level it out. Get some topsoil and use tools like a string level, levelling rake, or compactor to smooth it over the whole area. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but take your time and make sure it’s done right. This soil will support either the sides (if in-ground) or bottom (if above-ground) of your new pool.
